Students Trapped as Exam Hall Collapses During WAEC Exam in Taraba

Dozens of students narrowly escaped death on Wednesday evening when classroom structures collapsed at Government Secondary School, Namnai, Gassol LGA, Taraba State, during a heavy downpour accompanied by a windstorm.
The students, along with teachers, corps members, and supervisors, were trapped under the debris but were rescued by residents who responded to their cries for help. Several students sustained injuries, including fractures, and are currently receiving treatment at a local Primary Healthcare Centre.
A resident, Alhaji DanAzumi Lauris, confirmed that the incident occurred around 6 p.m. as the second batch of candidates had just begun their WAEC exams. He noted that the same storm also destroyed homes in the area.
In Jalingo, heavy rains disrupted WAEC exams, forcing some students to remain at their centres until 1 a.m. due to flooded roads and late delivery of exam papers, which delayed start times until 8 p.m.
Efforts to reach the state’s Commissioner for Basic Education, Dr. Augustina Godwin, were unsuccessful as her phone was unreachable at the time of reporting.
