The Super Eagles of Nigeria ended their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign in style with a 4–0 win over Benin Republic on Tuesday evening, but narrowly missed out on automatic qualification as South Africa clinched top spot in Group C.

Fresh from a 2–1 win over Lesotho, Nigeria needed both a big result and favourable outcomes elsewhere.

Victor Osimhen led the charge with a sensational hat-trick, striking early in the 3rd minute, heading in another before halftime, and completing his treble midway through the second half. Frank Onyeka sealed the victory with a stunning volley in Uyo.

Despite the dominant display, the result saw Nigeria finish second in Group C, with South Africa’s 3–0 win over Rwanda securing their place at the World Cup.

Coach Eric Chelle’s side will now await confirmation to see if they qualify among the four best runners-up in Africa for a ticket to the global stage.
