Tragedy struck in Obagie Community, Egor LGA of Edo State, as 12-year-old Emiliano Egwunbare was kidnapped and killed by his 18-year-old cousin, Tega Emajuwa.

According to reports, Emajuwa, who had briefly lived with the boy’s family, conspired with two accomplices to abduct the child. Despite receiving ransom from Emiliano’s parents, the suspects failed to return him.

Following the family’s distress call, police operatives intensified intelligence efforts, eventually tracing and arresting Emajuwa. One week later, he reportedly confessed to the crime. His statement led to the arrest of two others: Edugie Destiny (20) and Osayande Vincent (23).

Their confession guided authorities to the heartbreaking discovery of Emiliano’s remains, dumped inside a well in the community. Reports further allege that some vital organs had been harvested.

Deputy Spokesperson of the Edo State Police Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident and dismissed claims circulating online that the suspects were freed.

She clarified that the case was first reported at the Ogida Police Division before being transferred to the Anti-Kidnapping and Cybercrime Unit for discreet investigation.

All three suspects were charged to court on 16 October 2025 and were remanded for prosecution. Emiliano’s mother was reportedly present during court proceedings. His remains have been deposited at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) mortuary for autopsy.

This devastating act has left the community in deep mourning.

This heartbreaking case is a stark reminder of the legal and moral duty to safeguard every child. Every child is entitled to life, survival, and protection from violence, abduction, and exploitation.

Emiliano’s tragic death highlights the urgent need for stronger community vigilance and unwavering enforcement of laws that defend children. No child should be exposed to such cruelty, and society must continue to demand justice, accountability, and meaningful protection for all children.
