Terrorists Strike Borno, Niger, Kill Residents, Burn Schools, Homes

Armed attacks in Borno and Niger States have left schools destroyed, residents dead, and communities displaced, deepening concerns over child safety and access to education.

In Kautikari village, Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State, attackers killed one person and set parts of a primary and secondary school on fire. Officials confirmed that classrooms and office spaces were destroyed during the invasion.

Following the attack, pupils, teachers, and residents fled the community for safety. Many families ran into nearby bushes to escape the violence. The incident has further disrupted learning in the area.

In Niger State, armed men stormed Pissa community in Borgu Local Government Area. They killed three people and burned several houses in the early hours of Saturday. The attack forced residents to abandon their homes.

From a child protection perspective, these incidents directly threaten children’s right to safe education. Schools are expected to provide secure spaces for learning and development. However, repeated attacks weaken that foundation.

In addition, children in affected communities now face fear, trauma, and prolonged school closures. This disruption increases the risk of dropout and poor educational outcomes.

The Borno attack comes weeks after the abduction of more than 40 students in a nearby community. That pattern continues to raise alarm among parents and education stakeholders.

Security agencies confirmed the incidents and said some attackers were repelled. Despite this, one person died in Borno, and school structures were damaged.

Child rights advocates are calling for stronger protection of schools. They stress that education must remain safe, even in conflict-prone areas.
