3-Year-Old Child Pulled Alive From Rubble Six Days After Venezuela Quake

A three-year-old child has been rescued alive from the rubble six days after devastating earthquakes struck Venezuela, offering a moment of hope amid a growing humanitarian crisis affecting thousands of families.

The child, identified as Klieber Moran, was reportedly found inside the collapsed Los Corales Garden 1 building in La Guaira state during ongoing search and rescue operations. Authorities said the child was taken for medical treatment after being pulled from the debris.

The rescue has highlighted the importance of child protection measures during disasters, as children remain among the most vulnerable groups during emergencies. Rescue teams continue searching damaged areas, while families displaced by the earthquakes face urgent needs, including shelter, healthcare, food and protection services.

The earthquakes, which struck less than a minute apart, caused widespread destruction, collapsing buildings and trapping people beneath the rubble. Officials reported thousands of deaths and injuries, while humanitarian agencies warned that the impact on children could be severe.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has delivered emergency supplies to support children and families affected by the disaster. The supplies include health kits, newborn care materials, and items aimed at preventing disease outbreaks.

UN agencies have also raised concerns about children living in crowded shelters or sleeping outdoors, where they may face increased risks of illness, separation from caregivers, and emotional distress.

As recovery efforts continue, child protection experts stress the need to prioritise safe shelter, family reunification, healthcare and psychosocial support to help affected children recover from the trauma of the disaster.
