Tragedy at British Spring College: Family Alleges Negligence and Cover-Up in Death of Student

The family of 13-year-old Oscar Ezeani, a student of British Spring College (BSC), Awka, is calling for national attention after his tragic death in October 2025, a case that raises serious questions about the duty of care in Nigerian schools.

According to his sister, Ella Ezeani, the ordeal began when the school’s clinic allegedly disregarded his mother’s explicit medical instructions, administering Amatem instead of the family-approved Coartem for a cough and suspected malaria.

The family believes this unauthorized treatment triggered a chain of medical complications that the school failed to manage responsibly.

The situation worsened when Oscar was transferred to JoyVille Hospital, where his father reportedly found him tied up, hands, legs, and even his head bound, and allegedly left unattended for over an hour. The family insists that negligence, carelessness, and a total failure of duty led to his untimely death.

Further deepening their pain, the Ezeanis allege that the school owner failed to apologize and that CCTV footage near the clinic and hostel areas was deleted and disconnected, suggesting an attempted cover-up.

Now, the family is demanding a comprehensive and impartial investigation, an independent medical review, and a public apology from all institutions involved. They are urging the public, civil society, and child protection advocates to amplify Oscar’s story, not just for justice, but to ensure accountability in schools across Nigeria.

Oscar’s life, filled with promise, must not be lost in silence or institutional neglect.

Oscar Ezeani’s death is a painful reminder that every child’s life carries an inalienable right to life, care, protection, and dignity. Every child in Nigeria is guaranteed the right to health, safety, and protection from abuse or neglect.

When these rights are violated, it is not only a tragedy for one family but a failure of the system meant to safeguard all children.
