Four young girls, the youngest just 4 years old, were killed Monday afternoon when an SUV crashed through an after-school building in Chatham, Illinois. According to Illinois State Police, the driver plowed into the YNOT after-school camp building around 3:20 p.m., smashing through one side and out the other.

Three of the girls were struck outside the building, and one was hit inside. All four were pronounced dead at the scene. Their ages ranged from 4 to 18 years old. Several other individuals were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals, with at least one person airlifted for emergency treatment. Authorities have not yet released details about the conditions of those wounded.

The driver, who was not injured, was taken into custody at the scene and brought to a hospital for evaluation. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

The tragedy has shaken the Chatham community and the entire state. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker expressed his sorrow, saying he was “horrified and deeply saddened” by the loss of life.

“Our community lost a group of bright and innocent young people with their whole lives ahead of them,” Pritzker said in a statement. “Parents said goodbye to their kids this morning, not knowing it would be the last time. My heart is heavy for these families and the unimaginable grief they’re experiencing, something that no parent should ever have to endure.”
