Tri-State District Postpones Start of School Year

The Bellevue Independent School District in the Tri-State area has pushed back the start of its school year to Monday, Aug. 18, after encountering a problem with its HVAC system.
In a letter to parents, Superintendent Misty Middleton explained that maintaining a functional and comfortable classroom climate is essential for effective teaching and learning.
Middleton stressed that student safety and well-being remain the district’s highest priority, stating that it would not be appropriate to bring students into a building where conditions may be less than ideal. The delay is intended to give the district time to address the issue before students return.
This decision aligns with a child’s right to a safe and healthy learning environment, which guarantees that public school facilities meet basic health and safety standards, including proper ventilation and temperature control.
No child should be required to learn in conditions that could pose health risks or hinder their ability to focus and participate fully in class.
