Trump To Sign Executive Order to Dismantle the Department of Education

President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order today to initiate the process of dismantling the U.S. Department of Education, fulfilling a longstanding conservative objective to reduce federal involvement in education.
The executive order directs Education Secretary Linda McMahon to “take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education and return education authority to the States while continuing to ensure the effective and uninterrupted delivery of services, programs, and benefits on which Americans rely.”
While the executive order marks a significant step, formally abolishing the Department of Education requires congressional approval. The department, established in 1979 under President Jimmy Carter, oversees federal funding and policies for education nationwide.
Secretary McMahon has already initiated measures to reduce the department’s size, including significant workforce reductions, as part of the administration’s efforts to shift control over education to state and local authorities.
Critics argue that dismantling the department could negatively impact vulnerable student populations and reduce the enforcement of educational standards and civil rights protections. Legal challenges are anticipated as the administration moves forward with this plan.
