Two boys, ages 12 and 13, were arrested after causing significant damage to Friendship Elementary School in Deltona, Florida, over the weekend.

According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a fire alarm at the school and discovered a shattered glass door and a media center in disarray.

Body camera footage showed overturned tables, scattered books, and graffiti covering the walls, with total damages estimated at $50,000.

Surveillance footage revealed the boys were responsible for the vandalism. Reports indicate they initially broke into the school during the day and returned at night to cause further destruction. Both boys confessed to the acts, and their mothers turned them in to the authorities.

Each child was charged with two counts of burglary, two counts of trespassing on school grounds, criminal mischief, and theft.

Under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, children in conflict with the law have the right to be treated in a manner that promotes their reintegration into society and respects their dignity, with measures that prioritize rehabilitation and care rather than solely punishment.
