World Bank has revealed the urgent challenges facing girls in Nigeria. According to the institution, 45% of girls in the country give birth before turning 18, while 35% are married by the age of 15.
The alarming statistics were shared by World Bank Country Director Ndiame Diop, represented by Deputy Country Director Taimur Samad, at the National Conference on Girls’ Education and Empowerment in Abuja. He further noted that over two-thirds of girls in Nigeria drop out before junior secondary school.
Despite these challenges, Diop emphasized the role of collaboration between the Federal Government, 18 state governors under the AGILE program, and traditional and community leaders in tackling these issues.
Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, also spoke at the event, citing poverty, child labour, early marriage, and harmful cultural practices as major barriers to girls’ education. He called for stronger collective action to ensure that young girls are in school rather than on the streets.
