Child Abduction

7 Killed, Children, Students Abducted in Fresh Sokoto, Bauchi and Nasarawa Attacks

Concerns over the safety of children and vulnerable young people have intensified after separate attacks in Sokoto, Bauchi and Nasarawa states left seven people dead and several others abducted, including a 10-year-old boy and university students.

In Bauchi State, an attack on communities in Dass Local Government Area resulted in the death of one resident and the abduction of four affected persons. Among those taken was a 10-year-old boy who was reportedly abducted from a shop in Kagadama village alongside two other residents. The incident has raised renewed concerns about the risks children face in communities affected by insecurity.

The attack followed another incident in Sokoto State, where armed attackers invaded Lajinge community in Sabon Birni Local Government Area, killing six residents and injuring five others. Residents said the attackers also stole livestock during the overnight assault.

In Nasarawa State, three students of the Federal University of Lafia were abducted from an off-campus hostel near the university’s temporary site in Lafia. Police confirmed that one student has been rescued, while efforts continue to secure the release of the remaining affected students.

Child protection advocates say children living in communities affected by violence face multiple threats, including displacement, trauma, interrupted education and exposure to unsafe environments. They stress the need for stronger community protection systems, safer learning environments and quicker emergency responses to safeguard children and young people.

Security agencies have launched operations to rescue those abducted and apprehend the attackers. Families and communities continue to await the safe return of their loved ones as concerns grow over the impact of insecurity on children’s rights, education and wellbeing.
