Two people were taken to the hospital Saturday evening after a drive-by shooting in Monroe County, allegedly carried out by a teenager.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 8:45 p.m. to reports of gunfire at the Charring Square Apartments on Greenwycke Lane, located off South Dixie Highway. When they arrived, they found two people suffering from gunshot wounds.

Both were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. As of Sunday morning, their injuries were not considered life-threatening, and they were reported to be in stable condition. A third person was present during the shooting but was not injured.

Sheriff Troy Goodnough described the shooting as a drive-by in a press release. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing a tan sedan with multiple occupants fleeing the area.

A deputy later stopped a vehicle matching that description as it was pulling out of Greenwycke Lane. Investigators later confirmed, using video evidence and witness statements, that it was indeed the vehicle. However, by the time the car was stopped, the shooter had already fled on foot.

Detectives were able to identify the shooter as a 15-year-old boy who lives near the scene in the 6100 block of Greenwycke Lane. A search warrant was executed at his residence, and the teen was taken into custody.

The boy, whose name has not been released due to his age, has been booked into the Monroe County Youth Center. He faces three counts of assault with intent to murder. A petition is pending, and a preliminary hearing will be scheduled.
