48 Days in Captivity: Oyo, Borno School Abductions Continue as Teachers Call Off Protest

It has been 48 days since armed men attacked schools in Oyo and Borno States, abducting dozens of pupils and teachers in coordinated incidents that have continued to raise concerns over school safety in Nigeria.

In the past weeks, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) launched protests across several states, demanding urgent government action and stronger protection for schools. Teachers marched in Lagos, Rivers, Edo, Osun, Borno and the Federal Capital Territory, calling for the safe return of abducted learners and staff.

However, the union has now suspended the protest in Oyo State, following renewed talks with the state government and assurances on improved security measures. Teachers in the state were directed to resume duties from 2 July 2026 after the decision was approved by the union’s leadership.

Government responses have included the deployment of forest guards in Oyo State and visits by federal security officials to affected communities, alongside ongoing rescue operations.

Religious and civil society groups continue to call for stronger national action on insecurity affecting schools.

Despite these interventions, the fate of many abducted pupils and teachers remains uncertain, as families mark 48 days without closure and continue to wait for updates.
