Over the weekend, a mother shared on social media that her 7-year-old son was hanged in a boys’ bathroom by a fourth grader at Paul Barnhart Elementary School. In her post, she expressed feelings of anger, hurt, and confusion, but also gratitude that her son survived the ordeal.
The school’s principal sent a letter to parents, explaining that the incident occurred when two students were reportedly horseplaying in the bathroom, and one student’s jacket got caught on a stall door hook, preventing them from freeing themselves. The other student left the bathroom to seek help. However, the victim’s mother doubts this explanation, feeling it doesn’t fully account for what happened.
While some parents acknowledge that children can be mean, they believe such violent behavior is not typical for younger children. Both Charles County Public Schools and the Charles County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident. The One in Five Foundation for Kids, formerly the Uvalde Foundation, also announced it will launch an investigation.
The victim’s parents are thankful their son was found in time but are upset with the school’s response. They question why children of different ages were in the bathroom together and where the adult supervision was. The boy’s father emphasized the need for accountability, asking why faculty were unaware of the situation.
