The demand for transitional kindergarten is rising in Oakland, leading to its expansion.

Zazzi Cribbs faced childcare challenges when her daughter’s daycare closed during the pandemic. She discovered transitional kindergarten at Prescott Elementary, where her daughter thrived academically. With another child soon to turn 4, she easily decided to enroll him in transitional kindergarten too. Oakland Unified School District is expanding transitional kindergarten as part of a statewide move towards universal prekindergarten. The expansion aims to address the achievement gap and improve readiness for kindergarten. However, accommodating more transitional kindergarten students poses challenges for space and staffing. OUSD is opening new classes and satellite sites to meet demand. The transition requires careful planning to ensure suitable facilities for younger children. Transitional kindergarten offers a structured curriculum, unlike preschool’s play-based approach, and helps children prepare for kindergarten. Despite challenges, efforts are underway to inform families about available options and dispel misconceptions about school quality.
