State approval of Louisiana home-school curricula could be erased

< 1 min read

State Rep. Beryl Amedée, a homeschooling advocate, proposed House Bill 650 to simplify the homeschooling process by eliminating BESE’s approval of curricula. While some support her bill, others express concerns about removing accountability for homeschooling parents. Currently, parents must notify BESE when homeschooling, using approved or non-approved curricula, and receive a non-state-recognized diploma. Amedée’s bill aims to streamline this process, allowing only non-approved, nonpublic programs. Supporters argue that ten other states use similar processes, while critics worry about standards for homeschooling. Despite concerns, the bill narrowly passed the House Education Committee.
