Seattle Public Schools District Ends Gifted Student Program Due to ‘Historical Inequity’

< 1 min read

Seattle Public Schools is discontinuing its gifted and talented program, the “Highly Capable Cohort,” to address historical inequities. The decision follows concerns that the program was predominantly white and lacked diversity. Starting from the 2021-22 school year, the district began phasing out the program, citing disparities where Hispanic and black students were underrepresented compared to their white and Asian peers. By 2024-25, the program will be replaced with the “Highly Capable Neighborhood School Model,” aiming to be more inclusive and available across all schools in the district.
