A recent study from the University of Chicago Consortium on School Research indicates that Chicago high schools that removed police officers in recent years experienced a slight decrease in the most severe student disciplinary violations. The study focused on schools that opted to remove school resource officers (SROs) after 2020, finding that these schools saw small declines in high-level infractions such as threats, violence, and substance-related incidents compared to years when SROs were present. The findings come as Chicago Public Schools prepares to implement a new safety policy removing SROs from all campuses for the upcoming school year.
