Lone Finalist for EBR Superintendent Bows Out

< 1 min read

Andrea Zayas, the lone finalist for the East Baton Rouge Parish Schools superintendent position, has withdrawn her candidacy citing unfavorable conditions within the school district’s governance. In a letter sent Thursday, Zayas expressed that the current focus does not align with creating a culture that prioritizes equitable outcomes for children, leading to her decision to withdraw. Kevin George, the other remaining finalist, previously withdrew after failing to secure the necessary votes from the school board. The board is scheduled to meet Thursday night to discuss selecting a new superintendent to replace Sito Narcisse, who departed earlier this year. The decision must be made by July 23. Interim Superintendent Adam Smith, despite community support, was not chosen as a finalist. East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome has urged board members to prioritize children’s education and unify to bring stability to the school system ahead of the upcoming school year.
