Ministry of Education Halts 100 School Building Projects

< 1 min read

The Education Ministry has paused numerous school building projects to save $2 billion, affecting 352 projects at 305 schools. Out of these, 110 will proceed with modifications such as simplified designs or modular solutions. The halted projects include new classroom blocks at Beach Haven School in Auckland and a redevelopment at Burnside High School in Christchurch, which is facing significant property issues. School principals have expressed disappointment, highlighting critical needs for additional classroom space and improved conditions. The ministry’s review aimed to ensure cost efficiency amid rising construction costs. Many projects will be reconsidered in future budgets, while some have already been paused or scaled down.
