For years, I’ve advocated for the inclusion of my neurodiverse son, John, in various aspects of life. The recent appearance of Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz’s neurodiverse son, Gus, at the Democratic National Convention felt like a significant moment for disability representation in America. Although Gus and John have different diagnoses—Gus has a nonverbal learning disorder, ADHD, and anxiety, while John has severe autism, ADHD, and is nonverbal—Gus’s public presence and the Walz family’s openness were inspiring.
