In late June, a group of elementary teachers at Milwaukee’s North Division High School participated in a math workshop despite the sweltering heat due to malfunctioning air conditioning. The workshop, led by math education specialists Danielle Robinson and Alicia Socha, focused on deepening teachers’ understanding of math concepts and improving their teaching methods. The session included solving basic arithmetic problems and exploring how to effectively teach these concepts to young students. Teachers also engaged in more advanced topics, such as adding fractions using a number line, which some had never encountered before. The district has invested nearly a million dollars in Covid-19 relief funds to support these professional development sessions for teachers and principals.
