Researchers at Maynooth University in Ireland have made important discoveries about the impact of homework on student achievement. Led by Prof Andrew Parnell and his team, the study analyzed data from the “Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study” (TIMSS 2019), focusing on 4,118 Irish second-year secondary school students. Published in Learning and Instruction, the research found that the frequency of homework is more crucial than its duration for improving academic performance. Daily homework was most effective for mathematics, while assignments given three to four times a week were beneficial for science. Notably, short homework tasks of up to 15 minutes proved as effective as longer ones, suggesting that regular, concise assignments can enhance learning without overwhelming students.
