New Detroit Schools program will pay Kids to Stay After School and Work on Reading

< 1 min read

The Detroit Public Schools Community District is launching a new program aimed at improving student engagement with literacy. The district has a well-documented literacy crisis, highlighted by a “right to read” lawsuit filed by former students in 2016. Currently, over half of the 8th graders who graduated last spring are reading two or more grade levels below their expected proficiency, a challenge that Superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti says compounds throughout high school. Freshman Syncere Williams, entering Cass Tech High School, expressed his struggle with reading, mentioning difficulties with complex words and forgetting simple ones. This sentiment reflects the challenges faced by many students in the district, emphasizing the urgent need for effective literacy interventions.
