Gov. Kathy Hochul has proposed a major expansion of the state’s child tax credit — a win for the child poverty advocates who have long pushed for a higher payment for struggling families.
The expansion would raise the annual tax credit to up to $1,000 for each child under 4 and up to $500 for each child between the ages of 4 and 16. The change would roughly triple the current maximum of $330 per child and double the average credit given out to families from $472 to $943. Announced Monday, Hochul’s proposal is one of the measures she said will be highlighted in her State of the State address scheduled for Jan.14.
