Judge orders MPS to hire 25 safety officers by February deadline

< 1 min read

A Milwaukee County judge has ordered Milwaukee Public Schools to comply with state law requiring the district to employ 25 school resource officers.

The court order requires MPS to have the officers in place by the morning of Feb. 17 or appear before the court that afternoon to explain their non-compliance.

The judge also directed the Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty to amend its complaint to add the City of Milwaukee as a party and will issue a written order by Monday.

The requirement stems from Wisconsin Act 12, passed in 2023, which mandated MPS have at least 25 school resource officers present during normal school hours and certain additional events by Jan. 1, 2024.
