On Friday, Principal Bianca Reyes of Julia de Burgos Elementary School addressed concerns sparked by social media posts alleging the presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in the school. In a letter to families, Reyes clarified that these allegations are unfounded, confirming that ICE agents have not been seen on or near school property.

Following this reassurance, the School District of Philadelphia released a statement emphasizing its dedication to fostering safe and inclusive environments for all students and families.

Superintendent Tony B. Watlington, Sr., Ed.D., reiterated the District’s commitment:
“In alignment with the U.S. Constitution, Pennsylvania State law, and in the spirit of the Board of Education’s Welcoming Sanctuary Schools Resolution, this commitment includes all students, no matter their race, ethnicity, immigration status, national origin, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, familial status, religion, or person’s abilities. The District will comply with required laws, and school leaders have been provided guidance about how to protect our immigrant students’ rights.”

The School District’s reaffirmation underscores its dedication to ensuring schools remain welcoming, secure spaces where every student and family feels supported and respected.
