Dozens of Education Department employees were placed on paid administrative leave Friday as part of the Trump administration’s broader effort to eliminate diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) initiatives from the federal government, according to sources familiar with the move.
Employees received notices stating that their email accounts were suspended but that they would continue receiving paychecks indefinitely. The department cited guidance from the White House’s Office of Personnel and Management (OPM), issued on January 21, directing federal agencies to place all DEIA-related employees on immediate leave as part of the administration’s effort to dismantle DEIA offices and programs.
At least 55 career employees, including some with decades of service, were affected. While many did not hold official DEIA titles, the group reportedly included civil rights attorneys handling student discrimination and antisemitism cases, a grants office employee, and a team member focused on AI in education.
