A new bill introduced in West Virginia would require all public school classrooms to observe a moment of silence at the start of each school day.
Senate Bill 80, sponsored by Senator Patricia Rucker (R-Jefferson), states that every student has the right to freely exercise religion in schools while being free from state pressure to participate or abstain from religious observance.
The bill mandates that each classroom observe one minute of silence daily, during which students may meditate, pray, or engage in any other silent activity that does not disrupt others. Teachers would be responsible for ensuring students remain seated and silent during this time.
