Lekki School Sealed Over Wastewater Pollution

The Lagos State Government has sealed off Global International College, located in Ikate-Elegushi, Lekki, for allegedly discharging untreated fecal sludge and wastewater directly into public drains.
The action, carried out by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office on Saturday, July 5, 2025, follows multiple warnings that the school reportedly ignored.
According to Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, the institution was found pumping raw sewage into public drainage systems, a serious offense that endangers both public health and the environment.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Wahab said the school’s actions amounted to creating a public nuisance, polluting the community, and putting the lives of children at risk.
Untreated wastewater, especially in areas surrounding schools, increases the risk of waterborne diseases like cholera, typhoid, and dysentery, thereby violating children’s right to live in a safe environment and endangering their lives by exposing them to health hazards.
Children are particularly vulnerable due to their developing immune systems and tendency to come into contact with contaminated surfaces and water. The situation could have led to an outbreak, not just among students, but within the wider community.
Commissioner Wahab urged Lagos residents and institutions to embrace responsible wastewater disposal and hygiene practices.
He emphasized that the state government will not tolerate environmental violations, warning that any establishment found to be endangering public health through pollution will face strict sanctions or prosecution.
