Don’t Overlook Snoring in Children, Paediatrician Advises Parents

A Consultant Paediatrician, Dr. Ayodele Renner, has called on parents to pay close attention to children who snore, warning that it could be a sign of underlying health problems.
He explained that snoring in children is often linked to difficulty in breathing, which may be caused by infected or enlarged adenoids. According to him, adenoids are tissues located behind the nose that help the body fight infections, but when swollen due to infections or allergies, they can obstruct breathing.
“Children with enlarged adenoids may breathe through their mouths when awake and snore heavily when asleep. This can lead to repeated infections, frequent fevers, and very disruptive sleep patterns that affect both the child and the family,” Dr. Renner said.
He added that while some children respond well to conservative management, others may require surgery by an ear, nose, and throat specialist if the condition persists.
Medical experts also note that although adenoids play an important role in boosting immunity during early childhood, removal may be necessary when they become persistently enlarged and compromise a child’s health.
Parents are therefore encouraged to seek medical advice promptly if their child exhibits prolonged snoring, recurrent infections, or breathing difficulties.
Every child has the right to enjoy the highest attainable standard of health and access to medical care. Ensuring early diagnosis and treatment of conditions like enlarged adenoids is part of protecting this right and securing a healthier future for children.
