Nigeria Takes Bold Step to Guard Children from Cyber Risks as FG Moves to Set Social Media Age Limits

Nigeria is taking a significant step toward safeguarding children online as the Federal Government begins consultations on introducing age restrictions for social media use. The initiative, led by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, aims to protect children from online risks while preserving the educational and social benefits of digital access.

The move reflects urgent concerns over the exposure of children to cyberbullying, online grooming, harmful content, misuse of personal data, and addictive platform features. With more than 40 million Nigerians spending an average of six hours daily on social media, the need for proactive protection measures for children has become critical.

To guide the policy, the government has launched a public poll inviting input from parents, educators, young people, and digital experts. The ministry emphasizes that any framework should reflect national priorities, respect children’s rights, and address the realities of Nigeria’s digital landscape.

Possible measures under consideration include age restrictions, improved age verification systems, enhanced platform accountability, and stronger regulatory oversight.

Globally, countries like Australia, France, Indonesia, and Denmark have already implemented or are planning social media age restrictions to protect children, typically setting minimum ages of 15 or 16. Nigeria’s move to consider similar safeguards is therefore aligned with emerging international standards and represents a promising step forward in child protection.

Experts note, however, that policy formulation alone is not enough. Effective implementation will require training for educators, public awareness campaigns, strict enforcement of platform compliance, and robust monitoring of online risks.

By combining thoughtful regulation with concrete execution strategies, Nigeria has the opportunity to create a safer digital environment where children can benefit from technology without being exposed to harm.
