Ghanaian Woman to Undergo Psychiatric Evaluation After Allegedly Preparing Children’s Meal with Faeces and Urine

Authorities in the Weija-Gbawe Municipality of Ghana have initiated a psychiatric evaluation for a woman accused of cooking meals for her children using faeces and urine, a case that has triggered widespread concern over child protection and safeguarding standards.
The incident, reported to have occurred in the Bulemi community, gained public attention following a viral video that raised alarm about the safety and welfare of the children involved. According to reports, the woman allegedly admitted to the act, prompting urgent intervention from health and social welfare authorities.
Officials from the Department of Social Welfare, working alongside security agencies, have removed the children from the environment to ensure their immediate safety while investigations continue. The move aligns with child safeguarding protocols aimed at preventing further exposure to harm, neglect, or unsafe living conditions.
The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, is said to have been involved in coordinating the response, which includes a psychiatric assessment to determine the mental state of the woman. Authorities indicate that understanding her psychological condition is critical both for her wellbeing and for assessing the circumstances that led to the incident.
The case has intensified discussions around child protection systems in Ghana, particularly the need for early detection of mental health challenges within households and stronger community-level monitoring mechanisms. Child welfare advocates stress that safeguarding children requires timely intervention, coordinated institutional response, and improved access to mental health and social support services.
The development also highlights the responsibilities of families, communities, and state institutions in ensuring that children grow up in safe and nurturing environments. As investigations continue, stakeholders are calling for enhanced public awareness and reinforced safeguarding frameworks to prevent similar incidents in the future.
