Man Beheads Six-Year-Old Girl in Ibadan, Exposes Child Safety Failures

IBADAN — Child protection concerns have intensified in Oyo State following the killing of six-year-old Mutiyatu Sunday in Ibadan, a case that has raised urgent questions about community safeguarding and child safety systems.
The Oyo State Police Command confirmed the arrest of a 23-year-old suspect, Sodiq Kayode Akorede, in connection with the incident, which occurred on April 11, 2026, in Adigun Village, Olorunda Ogunsola area.
According to police, the suspect was found in possession of the child’s severed remains following a swift response by operatives deployed on the orders of the Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga. Authorities said preliminary investigations suggest the suspect admitted involvement during interrogation.
From a safeguarding perspective, the incident highlights critical gaps in child protection at community level, where early warning signs and preventive intervention mechanisms remain weak. Child rights advocates say such tragedies underline the need for stronger community surveillance systems, improved reporting channels, and faster response frameworks to protect vulnerable children.
Police also confirmed that the suspect was attacked by an angry mob before officers intervened to prevent further violence and secure the scene. Authorities condemned the resort to jungle justice, warning that it undermines due process and can obstruct proper investigation and safeguarding outcomes.
The suspect, who sustained injuries during the mob attack, has been taken for medical treatment and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and prosecution.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant, report suspicious activity promptly, and cooperate with security agencies, stressing that child protection requires coordinated community and law enforcement action to prevent further tragedies.
