Child Protection Measures Under Scrutiny as Gunmen Attack Oyo Schools, Kill Teacher, Abduct Pupils and Staff

Fear spread across parts of Oyo State after gunmen attacked two schools in Oriire Local Government Area. The attackers killed a teacher and abducted pupils, students, and school staff.
The incident happened in the early hours of May 15, 2026, according to the Oyo State Police Command.
Police spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, said the gunmen arrived on motorcycles before invading Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota and Community Grammar School/L.A Primary School in Esiele.
Among those abducted was the Vice Principal of Community Grammar School, Mrs Alamu Folawe.
Police confirmed that an assistant headmaster, identified as Mr Adesiyan, died during the attack.
Authorities also said the Gunmen attacked an okada rider who lost his life after he reportedly resisted attempts by the attackers to seize his motorcycle.
According to the police, the gunmen later took away a Toyota Corolla belonging to the abducted Vice Principal. They later set the vehicle ablaze along a road leading to the forest.
The attack has raised fresh concern about the safety of children and teachers in vulnerable communities.
From a child protection perspective, the incident highlights growing fears around insecurity in school environments. Advocates say repeated attacks on schools can create fear among children and discourage parents from sending them to class.
Meanwhile, security operatives have launched rescue and manhunt operations across the affected communities.
The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, led officers and other security commanders to the area for assessment and operational coordination.
Police said tactical teams, intelligence units, and other security assets are now working to rescue the abducted victims and arrest those behind the attack.
Authorities also urged residents to remain calm and share credible information that could assist ongoing rescue efforts.
The latest incident has added to growing concerns over school safety in communities facing increasing security threats across Nigeria.
