Police Launch Full Probe After Learner Driver Allegedly Crashes Into Port Harcourt Home, Kills 3 Children

The tragic death of three children in Port Harcourt has raised fresh concerns about child protection, safeguarding, and the safety of children in residential communities. The incident has also sparked demands for stronger accountability and stricter enforcement of road safety laws to prevent avoidable child deaths.

The Rivers State Police Command confirmed that investigations are ongoing into the fatal crash that claimed the lives of three siblings aged 3, 4, and 10.

The children reportedly died after a vehicle veered off the road and crashed into their family compound along the Eastern Bypass in the Ogbunabali area of Port Harcourt on May 15.

According to reports, a young man was allegedly teaching his girlfriend how to drive when the vehicle lost control and rammed into the residence. The impact reportedly killed the children instantly, while two other victims suffered injuries.

Child rights advocates say the incident highlights the growing danger children face when adults engage in reckless behaviour around homes and populated neighbourhoods. They warned that children remain vulnerable when safety measures are ignored in environments where families live and play.

The grieving mother, Amarachi Promise-Amadi, has continued to demand justice for her children. She also alleged that some medical facilities delayed emergency treatment for the injured victims after the crash.

Among the hospitals mentioned was the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital. Advocates say timely emergency response is a critical part of child safeguarding, especially during life-threatening incidents involving minors.

Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Olugbenga Adepoju described the incident as tragic and painful. He assured residents that the police would conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that anyone found responsible faces justice.

The case has continued to generate outrage across social media and within the community. Many residents and child protection groups are now calling for safer residential roads, stricter supervision of learner drivers, and stronger systems to protect children from preventable harm.
