Children’s Day in Pain: Makinde Consoles Families of Abducted Oyo Pupils Amid Rescue Efforts

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has expressed sympathy for families of abducted pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area during the Children’s Day and Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.
The governor’s message comes as concern continues to grow over the fate of children and teachers kidnapped during attacks on schools in Ahoro-Esinle community nearly two weeks ago.
In a message posted on his official X account, Makinde acknowledged the pain many families are facing during what should have been a joyful celebration for children.
“As we mark this year’s Eid and Children’s Day, our thoughts are with every family awaiting the return of their loved ones,” he stated.
He also praised security agencies working to rescue the victims and improve safety in affected communities.
The attack on schools in Oriire Local Government Area shocked many residents across Oyo State. Suspected terrorists stormed three schools on May 15 and abducted several pupils, including toddlers, alongside teachers.
The crisis later worsened after reports confirmed that teacher Michael Oyedokun was killed in captivity. The development sparked public outrage and renewed calls for urgent government intervention.
Governor Makinde assured residents that rescue efforts remain ongoing. Reports indicate that communication has already been established with the abductors, although officials have not released details of the discussions.
Child protection experts warn that prolonged captivity can leave children with lasting emotional and psychological trauma. As fear spreads across affected communities, many parents reportedly feel unsafe sending their children back to school.
Advocates for child rights say this year’s Children’s Day celebration in Oyo has been overshadowed by fear and uncertainty. They stress the need for stronger school security systems and faster emergency response measures.
Meanwhile, rescue operations continue across affected areas. Families remain hopeful that the abducted children and teachers will return home safely.
