Falz, Civil Society Groups Call for Nationwide Protest Over Abducted Schoolchildren

Popular Nigerian music artist and activist Falz has joined civil society organizations in calling for nationwide protests over the continued captivity of dozens of abducted Nigerian schoolchildren.
The groups made the call after the 2026 Children’s Day celebration, expressing outrage that at least 81 children remain in captivity following recent attacks on schools in Oyo and Borno states.
In a joint statement, the activists condemned what they described as the government’s slow response to the abductions. They argued that children should not remain trapped in terrorist camps while national celebrations continue.
From a child protection perspective, the groups warned that prolonged captivity exposes children to severe emotional trauma, fear, violence, and long-term psychological harm.
The statement noted that 39 pupils and seven teachers were abducted during attacks on schools in Oyo State. Another 42 children were reportedly taken during an attack on a school in Borno State.
The organizations questioned why stronger rescue operations have not secured the release of the affected children. They also criticized what they described as inadequate urgency from both federal and state authorities.
According to the groups, protecting children remains one of the primary responsibilities of government. They stressed that children belong in safe schools and communities, not in captivity.
Child rights advocates say repeated attacks on schools continue to threaten education across conflict-affected communities. Many parents now fear sending children to school because of growing insecurity.
Security experts also warn that attacks on schools can create lasting disruptions in learning and child development. They say children exposed to violence often struggle with trauma, anxiety, and emotional distress.
The coalition urged Nigerians, labour unions, youth groups, and civil society organizations to participate in peaceful protests demanding stronger action to rescue abducted children and improve school security.
Meanwhile, families of the affected children continue to wait anxiously for updates on rescue efforts.
The statement was signed by several activists and civil society leaders under the #EndBadGovernanceMovement and allied organizations.
