Teacher Killed, Students Abducted as Gunmen Attack Borno School During NECO Exam

Armed men have attacked Government Day Secondary School in Lassa, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, abducting an unspecified number of students during the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination.
The incident, which occurred on Monday morning, caused panic as the attackers stormed the school while students were writing their exams. The assault disrupted the session and forced students and staff into chaos.
Reports indicate that a teacher was killed during the attack, while another sustained injuries. Several students remain unaccounted for as security agencies continue to assess the situation.
The Borno State Police Command confirmed the incident and said efforts are ongoing to determine the exact number of students taken. Officers have since launched search and rescue operations in the affected area.
From a child protection perspective, the attack highlights ongoing risks faced by children in conflict-affected regions, especially those attempting to access education. Schools, which should serve as safe spaces, continue to be exposed to violent disruptions.
Education stakeholders have raised concerns over the repeated targeting of learning environments in the North-East. They warn that such incidents not only endanger lives but also discourage school attendance among children.
Security agencies have intensified operations in the area, while authorities work with local communities to gather intelligence that may lead to the rescue of the abducted students.
The latest attack adds to growing calls for stronger protection of children in schools and more effective preventive measures to ensure safe access to education in vulnerable regions.
