Oyo School Abduction: Grandmother, Principal’s Husband Beg Makinde to Rescue Affected Persons

Child protection concerns continue to mount in Oyo State as a woman has appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde to secure the release of her daughter-in-law and four grandchildren who remain in captivity following the abduction of pupils, teachers, and residents in Oriire Local Government Area.
The emotional appeal came during the governor’s visit to the affected community on Saturday. Speaking before government officials and community members, the woman expressed deep concern for the safety and wellbeing of the children, who have spent days in captivity under uncertain conditions.
“My daughter-in-law and four grandchildren are among those kidnapped,” she said, identifying her daughter-in-law as a teacher who appeared in a viral video while carrying a baby on her back.
The abduction occurred after armed men attacked schools and surrounding communities in the Esiele and Yawota areas of Oriire LGA. Since then, families have continued to call for urgent intervention to secure the release of the affected persons.
From a child protection perspective, the prolonged captivity of children raises serious safeguarding concerns. Experts warn that children exposed to violent incidents and extended periods of uncertainty may face significant emotional and psychological challenges. Younger children are particularly vulnerable due to their dependence on caregivers for safety, stability, and emotional support.
During the visit, the husband of an abducted school principal also appealed for stronger rescue efforts. He urged the governor to remain committed to securing the release of all those being held.
The incident has further highlighted concerns about the safety of children in and around schools, especially in rural communities. Child rights advocates continue to call for stronger school protection measures, improved community security systems, and faster emergency response mechanisms to reduce risks facing learners and their families.
As rescue efforts continue, families remain hopeful for the safe return of their loved ones.
