Fear in Kogi as Armed Bandits Storm School, Kill Child, Vice Principal

The killing of a six-year-old child during a bandit attack on a school community in Kogi State has renewed concerns about the safety of children in and around schools.

The attack occurred on Wednesday when armed bandits stormed Iluke Bunu in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area. During the raid, the gunmen killed three people, including six-year-old Sunday Ayele and a school vice principal, Mr. Ganiyu Anifowose.

According to the Kogi State Police Command, the attackers arrived on about 40 motorcycles and were believed to be targeting students and residents for abduction. The incident has heightened fears about the growing security threats facing children and their right to learn in safe environments.

Shortly after receiving distress calls, security personnel moved into the area. Police officers, military personnel, and local vigilantes joined forces to confront the attackers. A fierce gun battle followed, forcing the gunmen to flee into nearby bushes.

While authorities said there was no evidence of a successful mass abduction, the loss of a young child has intensified calls for stronger protection around schools and communities. Many residents say children should not have to fear violence while pursuing their education.

The attack also claimed the life of 70-year-old Sunday Jacob Alhassan. In addition, one of the attackers was killed during the exchange of gunfire, while a member of the joint security team sustained injuries and is receiving treatment.

Child protection advocates have repeatedly warned that attacks on schools can leave lasting emotional and psychological effects on children. They stress that safeguarding children requires stronger security measures, rapid emergency response systems, and sustained efforts to keep schools safe.

Meanwhile, security agencies have launched operations to track down the fleeing attackers and prevent further threats to children and residents in the area.
