Oyo Abduction: Pupils, Teachers Spend 35 Days in Captivity as Terrorists Resist Rescue

The abducted pupils and teachers from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have now spent 35 days in captivity, as security agencies continue efforts to secure their release.

Recent reports indicate that the terrorists holding the affected persons are trapped inside the Oyo National Park, with security operatives reportedly blocking possible escape routes from the forest.

The attackers, identified as members of Jama’atu Ahlis-Sunna Lidda’Awati Wal-Jihad, have allegedly planted Improvised Explosive Devices in parts of the forest and continue to change locations to frustrate rescue operations.

Security sources said the difficult terrain and the group’s tactics have slowed down the operation, while some soldiers have lost their lives during encounters with the terrorists.

The terrorists have also reportedly intensified attacks in other parts of the country in an attempt to divert security attention and reduce pressure on the rescue mission in Oyo.

The abductors are said to be using the affected persons as human shields, making security forces cautious about carrying out a direct operation.

Meanwhile, the Oyo State Government has maintained that it will only release authorised information on the rescue efforts to avoid jeopardising the safety of the affected persons.

Families and communities continue to await the safe return of the 42 pupils and teachers abducted on May 15.
