38 Days in Captivity: Oyo Residents Block Ibadan Road, Demand Urgent Rescue of Abducted Pupils, Teachers

Thirty-eight days after schoolchildren and teachers were abducted in Oyo and Borno states, families continue to wait for their safe return.
The prolonged captivity has increased public concern and triggered calls for urgent action from authorities. Residents in Oyo State recently protested along the Iwo Road axis of Ibadan.
The protesters carried placards and demanded immediate steps from the government and security agencies. They called for the release of the affected persons and stronger measures to stop insecurity.
During the demonstration, residents prayed for the safe return of the pupils and teachers. They also demanded better protection for students, families, farmers and traders.
The Oyo affected persons, including 39 pupils and seven teachers from Oriire Local Council, were taken on May 15, 2026, after an attack on their school. A mathematics teacher, Michael Oyedokun, was later killed by the attackers.
The situation has also raised concern in Borno, where schoolchildren remain affected by similar security challenges. Families in both states are calling for a swift resolution.
Meanwhile, the South-West Coordinating Deputy Inspector General of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, assured Nigerians that rescue efforts are ongoing. He said security agencies are working together to secure the freedom of the Oyo pupils and teachers.
The 38th day in captivity has renewed fears over the safety of children in schools. Communities are hoping for positive news and a safe return for all those affected.
