“Don’t Advance or They Die”: Defence Minister Reveals Kidnappers’ Threat Over Oyo Schoolchildren and Teachers

The safety of abducted pupils and teachers in Oyo State remains a major child protection concern as authorities continue efforts to secure their safe return following reports that kidnappers threatened to harm the affected persons if security forces moved closer to their location.

Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Christopher Musa, disclosed that the abductors warned they would kill the children and teachers if security agencies attempted a direct rescue operation. He said the criminal group was allegedly using the abducted persons as leverage while demanding the release of individuals in military custody.

The pupils and teachers were abducted on May 15, 2026, from Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, and two other schools in Esinle, Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Musa explained that security agencies have had to carefully balance rescue efforts with the need to protect the lives of those being held. He said intelligence-led operations are ongoing as authorities work towards ensuring the safe release of the children and teachers.

Child protection advocates stress that children affected by abduction require urgent protection, trauma-informed support and safe reintegration after release. They also highlight the need for stronger preventive measures to ensure schools and learning environments remain safe for children.

The Defence Minister also called for stronger legal consequences for kidnapping and other violent crimes, arguing that tougher sanctions could serve as a deterrent.

As the rescue operation continues, families and communities remain hopeful for the safe return of the affected children and teachers, while child rights advocates continue to call for actions that prioritise children’s safety, dignity and wellbeing.
