Child Abduction

55 Days After Abduction, Oyo Schoolchildren, Teachers Rescued as Borno Pupils Remain in Captivity

All schoolchildren and teachers abducted during the May 15 attack on Ahoro-Esiele community in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have been rescued, 55 days after they were taken by armed assailants.

The release of the affected persons brings relief to families and residents who spent weeks awaiting their safe return after the attack, which targeted schools in the community and led to the abduction of 46 pupils, teachers and the principal of a secondary school.

The incident sparked nationwide concern and renewed calls for stronger security measures to protect schools and children across Nigeria.

However, the rescue comes amid continued concern over the fate of schoolchildren abducted in Borno State, who remain in captivity.

The Borno children were abducted from Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School in Askira-Uba Local Government Area of the state during an attack that left families and communities devastated. Their continued captivity has kept pressure on security agencies and authorities to intensify efforts to secure their release.

The Oyo abduction also suffered a tragic setback during the period of captivity when one of the abducted teachers, Michael Oyedokun, was killed by the abductors.

Details of the Oyo rescue operation, including whether any suspects were arrested or if a ransom was paid, have not been disclosed by authorities.

The successful rescue of the Oyo schoolchildren and teachers has renewed hope among families of other abducted schoolchildren still waiting for their loved ones to return home.

Child protection advocates have continued to call for urgent action to ensure that schools remain safe environments and that all affected persons held by armed groups are released safely.
