Yobe Police Arrest Man Over Alleged Sexual Abuse of Seven-Year-Old Girl, Renew Calls for Child Protection
The arrest of a 24-year-old man over the alleged sexual abuse of a seven-year-old girl in Yobe State has again brought the need for robust child protection mechanisms to protect children from sexual violence to the fore.
According to the Yobe State Police Command, the suspect was arrested by the operatives of the Garin Alkali Divisional Police Headquarters after he allegedly lured the child into a nearby bush in the area where the offence was reportedly committed.
Beyond the criminal investigation, the case underscores the importance of early reporting, community vigilance, and access to child-friendly support services. Police said the affected child was immediately rushed to a medical facility for examination, treatment and psychosocial care, which is crucial in helping children to start their recovery process after traumatic incidents.
The Commissioner of Police, Usman Kamfani Jibrin, said that the investigation will be conducted thoroughly and anyone found guilty will be prosecuted under the law. He also spoke against sexual violence against children, which he said is cruel, inhumane and unacceptable.
Child protection professionals remain adamant that child sexual abuse is a community problem that requires community action, including from parents, schools, community leaders and law enforcement. They urge carers to teach children about personal safety, supervise them closely and report any suspected abuse promptly to ensure that children are protected, justice is served and that they receive the specialist help they require.
