Lagos Island Takes a Stand as DSVA Intensifies Campaign Against Domestic, Sexual Violence
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has taken its 2026 Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month campaign to Lagos Island, using a community advocacy walk to promote prevention, early reporting and support for affected persons.
The advocacy walk, held on Friday, September 11, brought together government officials, health workers, advocates, community members and other stakeholders to raise awareness about domestic and sexual violence and encourage collective action.
The walk was flagged off by Princess Lara Oyekan-Olumegbon, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Lagos Island Constituency I. She stressed the importance of sustained advocacy, community involvement and shared responsibility in addressing domestic and sexual violence.
Dr Abimbola Bowale, Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Health District IV, highlighted the role of the health sector in responding to cases and ensuring that affected persons receive timely, compassionate and appropriate care.
DSVA Executive Secretary, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, said the campaign was designed to take prevention and zero-tolerance messages directly into communities. She encouraged residents to speak up about violence and support affected persons.
The walk began at SURA Primary Health Centre and ended at the Lagos Island Local Government, where participants were received by the Executive Chairman, Taiwo Ajibade Oyekan.
The community engagement also emphasised early reporting and vigilance. For children, stronger community awareness can help adults identify warning signs, report concerns promptly and connect affected children with appropriate support.
The DSVA said the campaign reflects the Lagos State Government’s commitment to sustained public awareness, prevention, support for affected persons and coordinated action to address domestic and sexual violence across the state.
