February 27 2024- High living costs, limited employment opportunities, and a desire to support families are driving many young Cameroonians to emigrate. Over the past three months, more than 6,000 teachers, doctors, and nurses have reportedly left public service jobs in Cameroon. While Europe has been a traditional destination, an increasing number are finding opportunities in Canada due to immigration schemes that favor young migrants. The exodus has prompted concern from President Paul Biya, who has led Cameroon since 1982. In a statement, the 91-year-old president urged young Cameroonians to stay, emphasizing that leaving is not the solution to the country’s problems.
