Texas Mother Demands Answers After Daughter, 3, Returns From Daycare Missing a Front Tooth

A dental examination described the child’s tooth as completely knocked out, while the daycare maintains that its internal investigation found no evidence the injury occurred at the facility.

THE WOODLANDS, Texas — Questions surrounding how a three-year-old girl lost one of her front teeth have prompted a state investigation into a Texas daycare, following conflicting accounts from the child’s mother and the childcare provider.

Alaia White said her daughter left home for Forest Crossing KinderCare on October 14 without any visible dental injury. However, when the child returned that day, White noticed that one of her front teeth was missing and that she had a scrape on her chin.

According to White, the child repeatedly attributed the incident to her teacher, saying that the teacher had broken her tooth and thrown it away.

Concerned by what she had been told, White returned to the daycare the following morning to seek an explanation. She said staff members claimed they knew nothing about the incident and reported that the child had neither cried nor shown signs of bleeding while at the centre.

White subsequently contacted the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) on October 15.

An agency spokesperson, Melissa Lanford, confirmed that a report alleging abuse at Forest Crossing KinderCare had been received and that an investigation was underway to establish whether abuse or neglect had occurred.

The agency said its findings would be forwarded to the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, which oversees the licensing and regulation of childcare facilities in the state.

Dental examination identifies traumatic tooth loss

The dental records describe the missing tooth as “avulsed”, a medical term meaning that it had been completely displaced from its socket. The dentist identified trauma as the most likely explanation.

The examination also raised concerns about possible damage to the permanent tooth developing beneath the child’s baby tooth.

White said the incident has affected her daughter’s everyday activities, including eating and speaking. She has also noticed what she describes as a slight lisp following the injury.

The uncertainty surrounding the circumstances of the tooth loss has added to the mother’s concerns about her daughter’s long-term dental health.

The child’s grandmother, Jervonne Hickman, has also called for an explanation, saying that if the injury was accidental, the family deserved to be told what happened.

KinderCare rejects claim that injury occurred at its facility

KinderCare has disputed the mother’s account of where the tooth was lost.

In a statement , the company said it conducted an internal review that involved examining child supervision records and speaking with employees. According to the provider, the review did not uncover evidence that the child lost her tooth while attending the centre.

The company also said its review considered the child’s reported statement that the tooth had been lost at home.

KinderCare maintained that it takes concerns about children’s well-being seriously and had proactively notified state licensing authorities. It added that it was cooperating with the regulatory review.

White, however, rejects the company’s explanation and insists that her daughter did not lose the tooth at home.

Child moves to another daycare as mother considers police report

Following the incident, White withdrew her daughter from Forest Crossing KinderCare and enrolled her at another childcare facility.

She said the experience has affected the child’s sense of security, particularly when it comes to attending daycare. According to White, her daughter has expressed fear about going to a new centre.

The mother also intends to file a police report as she continues seeking answers about how the injury occurred.

The state investigation is expected to establish whether abuse or neglect took place at the facility. Until its findings are available, the circumstances surrounding the child’s injury remain disputed.

The case raises important questions about incident reporting, staff supervision and the responsibility of childcare providers to account for injuries sustained by children while in their care.
